Coming Home

He is the happiest, be he king or peasant, who finds peace in his home.                                                  ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)

You should love to come home.  If you don't find contentment and nourishment of your mind, body and soul in your home, it's not fulfilling it's purpose.  Of course this is also dependent on the people and pets you share your home with. ðŸ˜‰

When I step in the door of my new home, I look forward to solitude--with only a tail wagging welcome.  My home feels tranquil and soothing, and immediately envelopes me in comfort.  It's a total reflection and affirmation of who I am, my style and what I love.  It's my sanctuary, where I can breathe, rest, refresh and feel secure.

In the daytime, I want my home to be light-filled--with doors open to fresh air, to hear the noise of birds.  In the evenings, I want it cozy and snug--with the glow of candles and deep cushions to sink into.  In reality, right now when my doors are open, I hear construction next door and invite the dust of landscaping inside.  In the evenings I don't sink into the deep cushions of my chair in front of the tv because I still don't have internet--so I sit at my desk and stream on my computer.

My home is also for enjoying and sharing with others.  I want it to be welcoming and comfortable for my guests.  I want them to feel at ease and not want to leave.  I hope it feels relaxed and lived in, a balance of casual living and refinement, charming and unpretentious.  Mostly, I hope it feels timeless.

But of course, all my guests know it's a spanking-new house and (to my Oregon friends) all my furnishings are also new to them.  But over time, as it eases into the setting, gets a little overgrown, and the gloss of newness wears off, I hope it will acquire a patina of its own, and show the grace and serenity of a well-established home.
