Elements of Interior Design - Emphasis

After the design principles have been addressed, the elements of interior design come into play--what most of us think of as the creative part of interior design--Emphasis; Color; Line, Pattern & Texture and Lighting.  Some aspects of these are straight forward, others are more taste-oriented.

Emphasis

Emphasis is about choosing a focal or starting point.  Room use can determine the emphasis, or it might be a stunning architectural element, a breathtaking view, a striking painting, a well-worn rug, decorative fabric, tile or wallpaper, or a favorite collection.  It doesn't have to dominate the space, but it will be the feature that guides and influences your other choices.  From it you might draw a color, theme or mood.  It sets the tone for the space; everything else supports it.

The article highlights the significance of emphasis as one of the key elements of interior design. Emphasis serves as the focal point or starting point in a space, influencing the overall design choices and setting the tone for the entire room. Whether it's a stunning architectural element, a captivating view, or a cherished collection, the emphasis guides the creative process and influences decisions regarding color, theme, and mood.

By carefully selecting and emphasizing a particular element, the designer can create a visual hierarchy that draws attention and creates a sense of balance and harmony within the space. This element doesn't have to dominate the room but should guide and inspire other design elements.
