HYGGE - Cozy Contentment for Well-being
Hygge (“HOO-gaw”) is a defining characteristic of Danish culture and lifestyle. As a concept, the word can’t be directly translated into English. But it's about enveloping one's self in an environment of coziness and comfort, by surrounding yourself with the things that make life good, like informal time with family and friends, conviviality, sharing a meal. There’s no agenda, just appreciating life’s small pleasures and simple everyday experiences. Hygge not only embraces togetherness and community spirit, it encourages aligning one’s self with nature and the seasons, being present and mindful, and ultimately, self-care. All these to cultivate a sense of balance, satisfaction, contentment and well-being, and a fulfillment that makes life worthwhile.
Louisa Thomsen Brits calls Hygge “A practical way of creating sanctuary in the middle of very real life.”
Creating an atmosphere of coziness and comfort. At its core, Hygge is about the feeling you get when you’re wrapped in a warm blanket on a chilly day with cup of hot tea and a book, sitting in your “hyggekrog” (a cozy nook or favorite armchair). It's about achieving a calming ambiance—surrounding yourself with soft lighting, natural elements, and familiar objects. Your home should be welcoming and serve as a safe shelter, a sanctuary from the outside world. These elements reduce stress, encourage relaxation, and create a sense of security and well-being, both in your surroundings and your emotional state.
Communing with nature, embracing the seasons. Hygge is closely tied to the changing seasons and the rituals associated with each season. In the colder months, it might involve snuggling in front of the fire with candles burning, while in warmer months, it could mean picnicking outdoors or bringing flowers and greenery into the home. Hygge is especially needed during the dark and cold Danish winters—and is most associated with the winter holidays. In its relation to nature, Hygge promotes a sense of peace, tranquility and connection with the earth.
Togetherness and Community. Hygge fosters connection and enjoying the company of others. It encourages smaller, intimate gatherings for engaging in meaningful conversations and spending quality time together. And Hygge promotes a spirit of community. It prioritizes ‘we’ over ‘me’—being humble, treating everyone as equals and promoting inclusivity. Setting aside grievances and conflicts in favor of fostering goodwill, understanding and solidarity. All this interpersonal connection is inherently soothing and conveys a highly valued everyday experience of friendship, safety, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow.
Presence and Mindfulness. Hygge is about being focused in the ‘now’ rather than worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. It’s being there to savor every moment. Mindfulness helps us slow down, take time to fully appreciate our experiences and surroundings, pay attention to the little things, and find the joy in simple pleasures—reading a good book, savoring a piece of chocolate, a hot bath, or taking a walk in nature. This way we focus on what truly matters, take nothing for granted, and experience gratitude.
Self-care and Well-being. And finally, Hygge embodies self-care. It can be found in quiet solitude, enjoying life's moments alone, reconnecting with yourself and disconnecting from the digital world (embracing analog activities such as reading physical books). But it’s about creating a space and a lifestyle that support and promote mental health and inner peace—whatever that means to each individual—all essential for overall well-being.
